Jacqueline Mitelman was born in Scotland, and has lived in Melbourne, Australia most of her life apart from a period of years living in France. Since studying at Prahran college in the mid seventies, under the tutelage of Athol Shmith, Paul Cox, & John Cato, she has worked as a freelance photographer specialising in portraiture. Her work has appeared in Australia and internationally in magazines and newspapers, on CD and book covers, on theatre and music posters. A wide range of private commissions has resulted in a considerable collection of portraits of culturally significant Australians. |

Dog Portraits
An exhibition of 50 b+w large format portraits of dogs

"These subjects are approached with reverence and deliberation and, like a human portrait, strive towards an inner essence by mapping the creature's eyes and body language. There's much to be learnt from Mitelman's comic yet serious transposition of dogs into human guise. The anthropomorphic quality of her subjects is both inviting and vaguely disturbing.." - Anna Clabburn for The Melbourne Age January 20 1999

Faces of Australia
"Jacqueline Mitelman has boldly remained with the central tradition of portraiture, whether of painting or photography. She has the confident seriousness of one of the great Victorian Masters" - Donald Horne

"Mitelman has a keen sense of character and pose. Her sitters, all distinguished and innovative Australians, method-act themselves to the point of self-caricature.." - Catriona Moore for The Australian January 28 1989
